Wow... about to really geek myself out here, but uh, has anyone noticed an unhealthy relationship going on between the class of 2009 and thefacebook?
i'm going to go out on a limb here... but i *think* we might have a couple of incoming freshmen who actually applied to college for the sake of obtaining an edu email address and thus access to thefacebook. i'll be the first to admit to subscribing to the facebook and all its time wasting, friend stalking capabilities. in fact, i've even started a group or two in the face of actually doing something worthwhile with my time. the facebook is, naturally, a healthy transition from high school to college. the small setting of many high schools caters to an intimate knowlege of all of one's classmates come graduation day. in the same vein, through facebook, i am able to network a close group of friends at my choosing, who, i don't know, were "drunk or high when taking their facebook photo", or who "facebooked my mom last night". truly important stuff. the kind of fabric upon which lasting friendships are made. but more importantly, knowing that so many people on our often overwhelming campus are one of the "20 hottest kids at umass" really makes the 20,000 + undergrad feel like a tightknit little family at the end of the day.
But thefacebook should not be taken lightly. like many designer drugs it can be addictive and unhealthy, especially when droves of impressionable youth flock to it.
some notes/advice/scathing criticism to the class of 2009:
-you haven't even moved onto campus yet. that stated- you are not, nor have you ever been "boozin in john adams". and if you were, it's because you were visiting, and hadn't graduated high school yet. so everyone else in the room probably hated you.
-there's a chance that the psych tap actually isn't "where it's at". don't join the group until you actually know. you'll be avoiding a potentially awkward situation.
-spire makes you want to die? you've used it once. does a head cold make want to unnecesarily remove a limb? you know it snows here too... don't do anything rash.
-and finally... yes... i am fully aware that the class of 2009 is wicked awesome. much like the class of 2008, and hey, i bet the class of 2007 was pretty cool too. but here's just a smidge of an idea. lets consolidate the "class of 2009 is *insert self affirming adjective here*" into one gigantic (and yet still equally awesome, don't worry) group.
i apologize if anyone is offended by this entry. it's intentions are tongue in cheek.
but seriously guys, they're obsessed.
